School Profile
Pope John Paul II High School opened in 1980. It is a co-educational Catholic secondary school for grades 9-12 with a student body of 600 from suburban Boca Raton, and surrounding communities in Palm Beach and Broward Counties. Governed by the Diocese of Palm Beach, the school is administered by devoted Dominican Sisters and overseen by our Consultative Board, made up of Diocesan priests.
Accreditation: Pope John Paul II High School is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school also maintains membership in the National Catholic Education Association, The National Education Association, the Florida Catholic Conference and the College Board. In addition, academic departments maintain memberships in areas related to professional associations. All teachers are certified or in the process of certification by the State of Florida in their subject areas. For core subjects, the Sunshine Standards of Florida are followed. Florida course code numbers are used in the School Profile and the Course Selection Handbook.
Faculty: 54 professional staff members dedicated to excellence. All Faculty are certified to teach in their subject areas. Fifty-five percent of the Faculty has earned a Master or higher degree.
Grading System: All courses and all semesters are included in the Grade Point Average and Rank. Honors and Advanced Placement courses are weighted to reflect their challenging academic requirements.
Community Service: Students must earn 100 hours minimum of service for graduation requirements; 25 hours per year.
Quarterly Honors System:
Curriculum Features: The academic program is college preparatory. We offer Spanish, and Italian in addition to many Fine/Performing Arts courses. Honors level courses are offered in English I, II, III & IV; World History; American History to 1900; American Government; Economics; Biology; Chemistry; Marine Science II: Physics; Geometry; Algebra II; PreCalculus; Spanish I, II, III, IV, & V; History of Christian Thought I & II; Visual BASIC Computer Programming I and II.
Advanced Placement: The AP courses are offered in U.S. History, American Government, English IV Literature, Chemistry, Calculus AB, English III Language and Spanish IV Language, and Biology.
Dual Enrollment: College credit from St. Thomas University in Miami is offered in the following: History of Christian Thought Honors I & II, Visual Basic Computer Programming Honors, and Pascal Computer Programming Honors.
Class of 2005: Four Year Colleges and Universities: 95%; Two Year Colleges and Technical Programs: 5%
